The short answer is 83 to 89 minutes, but block two and a half hours
The TOEFL iBT you sit in 2026 takes between 1 hour 23 minutes and 1 hour 29 minutes of actual testing, according to the ETS blueprint for the redesigned test1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. The range exists because Reading and Listening are adaptive, and the module you are routed into after the first stage is a few minutes longer or shorter than the alternative1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. ETS rounds this up on its test content page and tells you to "allow approximately two hours to complete the test," which covers directions, transitions between sections and the tutorial screens2ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test Content: A Breakdown of Test SectionsOpen source ↗Jump to footnote.
The number that decides your morning is bigger than either of those. At a test center you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your test time for check-in3ETS OfficialTest Center Testing for the TOEFL iBT TestOpen source ↗Jump to footnote, and there is no scheduled break once the test starts4ETS OfficialTesting Policies and Procedures: GeneralOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. So the honest answer to "how long is the TOEFL" is about two and a half hours door to door, of which roughly ninety minutes are spent answering questions.

| Listening | 25 to 29 minutes | 47 | Yes, two stages |
| Writing | 23 minutes | 12 | No |
| Speaking | 8 minutes | 11 | No |
| Total | 83 to 89 minutes | 120 |

Reading: 27 to 30 minutes
Reading opens with a router stage that the blueprint budgets at 18 to 21 minutes, followed by a second module of about 9 minutes1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. Everyone gets the same router; how accurately you handle it decides whether the second module is the harder academic-leaning version or the easier daily-life one5TOEFL Resources2026 TOEFL Format RevealedOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. The 50 items split across three task types: 30 Complete the Words items, 5 to 15 Read in Daily Life questions, and 5 to 15 questions on academic passages1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. There is no per-passage clock, so the pacing is yours to manage inside the section timer.
Listening: 25 to 29 minutes
Listening runs an 18-minute router, then a lower module of about 7 minutes or an upper module of about 11 minutes1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. That 4-minute swing is most of the difference between the shortest and longest possible test, and it works in your favor: the longer module is the harder one, and only the harder one reaches the top bands. The 47 items come from four task types, roughly 15 to 19 Listen and Choose a Response items, 10 conversation questions, 6 to 10 announcement questions, and 8 to 16 academic talk questions1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. Writing: 23 minutes, three separate clocks

How much shorter the test got
Older prep material describes a very different day. Until July 2023 the TOEFL iBT took about three hours9ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Enhancements Debuting July 2023Open source ↗Jump to footnote. ETS cut it to under two hours from July 26, 2023 by trimming the Reading section, dropping unscored questions and replacing the independent essay9ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Enhancements Debuting July 2023Open source ↗Jump to footnote; that version ran about 116 minutes5TOEFL Resources2026 TOEFL Format RevealedOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. The January 2026 redesign then removed the integrated tasks and the long passages and brought testing time down to 83 to 89 minutes5TOEFL Resources2026 TOEFL Format RevealedOpen source ↗Jump to footnote1ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test: 2026 Update Test Blueprint and Specifications DocumentOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. If a book or video quotes a three-hour test with a ten-minute break, it is describing an exam that has not existed for three years.
Test center versus Home Edition timing
The test is the same length either way. What differs is the time around it.
At a test center, plan for the 30-minute early arrival ETS requires3ETS OfficialTest Center Testing for the TOEFL iBT TestOpen source ↗Jump to footnote, plus roughly 15 to 20 minutes of ID checks, photo and security screening that tutors report before you sit down10TOEFLMockTOEFL Exam Pattern 2026: All 4 Sections, About 90 Minutes, 1-6 Band ScoringOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. From there it is about two hours to the end of Speaking2ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Test Content: A Breakdown of Test SectionsOpen source ↗Jump to footnote.
For the Home Edition, ETS runs a proctor check-in that covers your ID, a scan of the room and a check of your equipment, and the test timer does not start until that is complete11ETS OfficialTOEFL iBT Home Test Day: What to ExpectOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. Once it starts, no breaks are allowed unless one was approved as an accommodation12ETS OfficialTesting Policies and Procedures: TOEFL iBT Home EditionOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. Budget the same two and a half hours you would for a center, be seated and checked in ahead of the appointment time rather than at it, and use the bathroom before you launch the check-in, because the next opportunity is after Speaking.
Accommodations that change the clock
Approved disability accommodations can add extended testing time or extra rest breaks13ETS OfficialAccommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related NeedsOpen source ↗Jump to footnote. Extended time comes in 25 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent versions, which stretch the test to roughly 1 hour 53 minutes, 2 hours 15 minutes and 3 hours respectively14MagooshHow Long Is the TOEFL? And How Long Should I Study? (2026)Open source ↗Jump to footnote. Requests are reviewed on documentation and the review takes about six weeks, longer if ETS asks for more paperwork, so this is not something to arrange the week before13ETS OfficialAccommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related NeedsOpen source ↗Jump to footnote.
What the timing means for how you prepare
Ninety minutes with no break sounds easy next to the old three-hour test, and that is the trap. The redesigned exam packs 120 items into that window and switches style every few minutes, from an academic paragraph to a campus notice to a two-person conversation to a forum post. Fatigue on this test comes from switching, not from length, and the section that suffers is the one at the end: you reach Speaking having said nothing for well over an hour5TOEFL Resources2026 TOEFL Format RevealedOpen source ↗Jump to footnote.
So practice the whole sequence, not just the sections. Once a week, run a full-length TOEFL 2026 mock test at the official section timing, in one sitting, with no pauses and headphones on, and check how your Speaking bands compare with the ones you get when you drill Speaking fresh. If they are lower under fatigue, that gap is the thing to train, and the fix is more full runs rather than more Speaking drills. On the other days, the practice hub lets you work on single tasks against their real per-item clocks, which is where the Writing section is won: get the ten Build a Sentence items under 30 seconds each and the Email and Discussion timers stop feeling tight.
For the full breakdown of what each of the twelve tasks asks of you, read the TOEFL 2026 format guide, and for converting your target score into a band per section, the TOEFL 2026 score conversion guide. Then put a full mock on the calendar for this week and time it door to door, check-in included.
