TOEFL Listen to an Announcement Practice

Listen to an Announcement plays a single speaker delivering a short notice, typically 40 to 85 words, the kind of thing you would hear over a campus PA system or in a club meeting: a schedule change, a room switch, a new sign-up deadline. One or two multiple-choice questions follow, appearing only after the audio finishes, with no replay available. This practice mode plays a fresh announcement for every item and scores your answer as soon as you submit, so you can drill the format's short, information-dense style. Because the whole clip is delivered by one speaker with no back-and-forth to lean on, the skill this task isolates is catching a specific detail, a time, a location, a reason, the first time you hear it.

Strategy tips

  1. 1Write only two notes: the topic from the first sentence and the action from the last. Most questions ask about these.
  2. 2If a time or room changes, cross out the old one. The old value is often a wrong answer option.
  3. 3Circle words like unless, only if, and except. Questions often ask who a rule applies to.
  4. 4Keep listening closely until the very end. The final instruction is the answer people miss most often.
