TOEFL Listen and Choose Response Practice
Listen and Choose a Response is new in the TOEFL 2026 Listening section. You hear a single short line of spoken English once, then choose the most natural reply from four written options. There is no replay button, and because the audio is only one line, the task rewards quick instinct for how a native speaker would actually respond over careful grammatical analysis. This practice mode plays fresh audio for each item and scores your choice instantly on submission, so you can build the instinct with repetition rather than by studying rules. It is the shortest and most direct of the four Listening task types, which makes it a good warm-up before working through the longer conversation, announcement and academic talk items on this site.
Strategy tips
- 1Before you read the options, decide what the speaker is doing: asking, requesting, or complaining. The reply must fit that.
- 2Be careful with any option that repeats a word from the prompt. This is the most common kind of wrong answer.
- 3The right reply to a yes/no question often has no yes or no. It gives a reason or new information instead.
- 4Ask who would say each option. Replies from the wrong person or about the wrong time are made to sound right.
